Errors and Problems with Butterick Pattern 3072

We interupt our regularly schedualed blogging to offer this public service anouncement...

I have been working on some costumes for our church Christmas play. I am making the shirt, pants and vest from Butterick pattern 3072 (also known as P203). I ran into several problems along the way, and found precious little info on the web that was helpful, so I thought I would share here what I eventually confirmed after calling Butterick.

1. The problem has been fixed if you have a copy of the pattern printed after 2001. I had just purchased mine so it must have been sitting on the shelf for a very long time.

2. The pants: Yes, the elastic charts were switched. The waistband chart should be the leg chart, and the leg chart should be the waistband chart.

3. The shirt: Yes, the stitching instructions for the collar are incorrect. When looking at the picture, you need to stitch along the sides and top of the collar, leaving the bottom edge (with the dot markings) open.

If you find this post because you are looking for answers for questions you have about this pattern, don't hesitate to comment, I will try to give you a more detailed explaination.

Hi Tirsa,

Ok, on page 5 of your instructions it says to "Turn in seam allowance on neck edge of uninterfaced COLLAR section Press. Trim pressed seam allowance to 3/8"." And the the picture right next to that shows the top edge folded down right? What you need to do is fold up the bottom edge instead, not the top.

The second instruction says to "Stitch the collar sections together leaving the neck edge open. Trim." and then the picture show the top open and the bottom stitched. Again the picture is incorrect. You stitch the sides and top, and the bottom part that connects to the shirt is left open, with the inside part of the neck edge folded up.

The next instruction says to "Turn. Press." But again the picture is backwards (top sewn closed, bottom open).

The last instruction says to "Pin collar to neck edge, matching symbols and large *'s of collar to opening edges...." and in this one the picture is finally correct.

So, to sum up, fold the bottom, stitch the top. The written instructions are correct I think, but the pictures are wrong.

Let me know if I can make it clearer, or if I can help you in any other way. :)

Hi Vics, I am making the jacket and the collor instruction also seemed wrong. Your help on the shirt got me going in the right direction and solved the jacket collor problem by sowing the bottom and leaving the top open which is just the opposite on the shirt pattern, Thanks Anne-Marie
